Done Days & A Solemn Man EP

I review a King Prawn EP I bought 5 years late by mistake

I was randomly browsing through Bandcamp the other day, and, reading about the new King Prawn album, I noticed a new double A side 7 inch had come out! So I gave it a punt. Looking at it now, it came out in 2013, so I got my wires totally crossed.

Oh well, if it was worth the cost of a couple of coffees in 2013, probably still worth it in 2019!

Whether a toddler enjoys your music is a good measure for the reggae strength of a ska punk record.

Lined up the A side “Done Days” first. It’s a booming track. Listened with my 2 year old. He definitely loved it, waving his arms around. Whether a toddler enjoys your music is a good measure for the reggae strength of a ska punk record. Punching trumpet lines, and a solid chorus. Loved it.

This day is done
I’m gonna rise again tomorrow with a brighter sun
This day is done
You gotta move with it
Don’t stop jump up and down
You gotta groove with it
When you’re hanging around
You gotta swing with it
When they try to shoot you down

Next is the AA side, “A Solemn Man“. Let’s be real here: a double A side… is a B side. You know it, I know it, the back cover which puts the A side in text twice the size of the AA side knows it… So this track is not really my cup of tea. Drops down into a bridge with a woebegone, almost Middle Eastern/Bedouin sort of flavour. I get what they are trying to do… but meh.

I’d give the A side 8/10, B side a firm 4. Still, glad I bought it, even if I was about 5 years late!
